Day 11

We went to Shuni's parent's house in Chichibu, a couple hours outside of Tokyo. After a breakfsast of salmon, squid, corchorus, pickles, and rice, Jen and the kids and I headed in search of this river 'close by' the house. After much meandering, we found the spot we were looking for...only to find the previously beach-like river bank to be demolished by a previous flood. It started raining, anyhow, so we stopped at Shunji's company for a little while. After heading back to the house, Shunji's father gave us a lift to a good part of the river where we had fun skipping stones and catching tadpoles. Alas, the river water was too churned up by last night's rain for any swimming.

  1. As usual, I can't see anything but "corchorus"? What's that? Should you bring some home for me to try? Think I can get it at Kalustyan's?

  2. Corchorus is an egyptian vegetable that resembles spinach and is very slimy once cooked (like okra) Seeing as I do not like to have gloopy consistency of the slime in my mouth, no, it is not worth bringing home to try :P

  3. Wow what a difference from the city. Looks like Chichibu is in the hills, not the mountains. How was the drive to the house; lots of interesting scenery?

    1. The drive from the house was...very dark, because we traveled at nighttime both ways :P Jen says we wen't over a couple hills, but truthfully, I couldn't tell the difference.

  4. The greenery in the scenery is so pretty...those famous Asian trees, I adore. The homes, the temple...it all looks so Japan! Cool Cecilia!

    1. I know! I love the way they do bonsai-type designs with the trees here. They're very pretty, but I'm sure they have to be diligent to keep it looking that way!

  5. Now that looks like Japan! Just what I thought-mountains, Japanese like homes, old statues in the foliage. All at the shop are loving this- can't wiat til you come home with all your stories. Love Donna

  6. Wonderful slideshow. So nice to see some countryside. (There isn't so much of it as one would think, is there?) Thanks, Cecelia.
